Description:
Music has been and continues to be an integral part of our lives and culture. Dating back many thousands of years, the earliest humans played rudimentary forms of music with very crude instruments. Over the following centuries, music, its content and the instruments used to create it evolved. Depending on where you lived in the world, music had different significance and was used in different ways. For instance, in Ancient Greece, music was associated with the theatre and special ceremonies. In the Middle Ages in Europe, music was strongly associated with the Church. This began to shift to more secular areas as the Europe entered the Renaissance. In tribal regions of the Americas and Africa, music was integral to spiritual events and story-telling.
In the 20th century music around the world began to change rapidly. New technologies in making music, combined with improved methods of travel and communication brought areas of the world and their musical tastes closer together. The rise of Rock and Rap, notably in North America, coincided with a boom in the music industry and expansion of radio and television services related to music. This was a period of great experimentation and expansion. If you had a particular taste in music, odds were that there was type that was perfect for you. Of course, not all people agreed on what constituted ‘music’ and there was a noticeable generational clash between the youth and the older generations concerning musical tastes.
The 1950s started the rock and roll revolution and this ‘movement’ gained steam throughout the 60s and 70s. New bands emerged and new stars were born. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, KISS, Ozzy Osbourne – just a handful of the bands and performers who shaped the music industry and caused controversy with parental and religious figures. While kids loved the new music and innovative sounds that made this music different from their parents’, the older generation grew concerned. We look back on this period and laugh because the older generation at the time believed this music was evil, degenerate and corrupting the youth. There were people who thought these bands were delivering satanic messages. In short, this new wave of music and their musicians were destroying the fabric of society.
A lot of the criticism that was aimed at the music industry 40 or 50 years ago continues to be seen today. Music and musicians are often labelled as corruptive forces and bad role models for our kids. They dress controversially, their music sounds different and, importantly, the lyrics in their songs send messages that parents don’t want their kids to hear. Yes, the message, often hidden within the song has been upsetting uber-conservative adults for generations. With old school rock, people looked for a message that could only be heard when the record or tape was played backwards. Called ‘backmasking,’ parents of the 1960s, 70s and 80s all got their torches and pitchforks when they heard what sounded to be satanic messages coming from their kids’ vinyl records. Satan aside, hidden drug and sex references have also been popular to find, whether playing a song backwards or just translating the lyrics that are hidden in plain sight.

Introduced as the nefarious villain imagined by Bram Stoker in his 1897 gothic horror novel, Dracula became the archetypical model for vampires in popular culture. But what is the real story behind this infamous vampire?

Although early in the novel Dracula dons a mask of cordiality, he often flies into fits of rage when his plans are interfered with. When cornered, Dracula has been known to use his super strength, immunity to conventional means of murder, or shape shifting abilities to evade his nemesis, Van Helsing.
Dracula Untold was a more contemporary retelling of the creepy story released in 2014, nearly 120 years after Dracula's birth. Centering on prince Vlad III Tepes, played by Luke Evans, who sacrifices his humanity to fight an invading army. Lord Vlad Tepes rules over a peaceful kingdom, until Sultan Mehmed II, king of Turkey, demands the first born male of every family in Romania join his army, including Vlad's son. To combat the overwhelming might of Mehmed II's military Vlad bargains with the ancient sorcerer, Caligula. Vlad gains the strength of 100 men, the speed of a falling star, and the power to destroy the invaders, at the cost of an endless thirst for human blood. Dracula Untold is a new origin story for the legendary vampire. Bram Stroker's 1897 novel Dracula has a minor relationship with Vlad III. Stoker took the name "Dracula" from the historical account of Vlad the Impaler, also known as Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia. Vlad earned the name "Dracul" after being initiated into the Order of the Dragon in 1431. In Romanian, the word "dracul" can mean "the dragon" or, more often today, "the devil." Vlad earned the name "Impaler" by striking stakes through his enemies hearts, and decorating his land with their corpses. Tales of Vlad the Impaler are as bloodthirsty as Dracula. He created forests of stakes at the borders of Romania, transforming Vlad into an icon of horror. A 1521 German pamphlet described Vlad the Impaler as someone who "roasted children, whom he fed to their mothers. And (he) cut off the breasts of women, and forced their husbands to eat them. After that, he had them all impaled." German stories claim Vlad killed more than 80,000 people. His notoriety as a monstrous tyrant inspired Bram Stoker to write the novel Dracula.

Charles Darwin: Science, Philosophy, Law, Religion, Literature, Cinema, Art & Popular Culture (2009)

Charles Robert Darwin, FRS[2] (/ˈdɑrwɪn/;[3] 12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist and geologist,[4] best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory.[I] He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors,[5] and in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding.[6]
Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species.[7][8] By the 1870s, the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. However, many favoured competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution.[9][10] In modified form, Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life.[11][12]
Darwin's early interest in nature led him to neglect his medical education at the University of Edinburgh; instead, he helped to investigate marine invertebrates. Studies at the University of Cambridge (Christ's College) encouraged his passion for natural science.[13] His five-year voyage on HMS Beagle established him as an eminent geologist whose observations and theories supported Charles Lyell's uniformitarian ideas, and publication of his journal of the voyage made him famous as a popular author.[14]
Puzzled by the geographical distribution of wildlife and fossils he collected on the voyage, Darwin began detailed investigations and in 1838 conceived his theory of natural selection.[15] Although he discussed his ideas with several naturalists, he needed time for extensive research and his geological work had priority.[16] He was writing up his theory in 1858 when Alfred Russel Wallace sent him an essay that described the same idea, prompting immediate joint publication of both of their theories.[17] Darwin's work established evolutionary descent with modification as the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature.[9] In 1871 he examined human evolution and sexual selection in The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, followed by The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. His research on plants was published in a series of books, and in his final book, he examined earthworms and their effect on soil.[18]
Darwin became internationally famous, has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history,[19] and his pre-eminence as a scientist was honoured by burial in Westminster Abbey.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Darwin
In the mid-19th century, Charles Darwin formulated the scientific theory of evolution by natural selection, published in his book On the Origin of Species (1859). Evolution by natural selection is a process demonstrated by the observation that more offspring are produced than can possibly survive, along with three facts about populations: 1) traits vary among individuals with respect to morphology, physiology, and behaviour (phenotypic variation), 2) different traits confer different rates of survival and reproduction (differential fitness), and 3) traits can be passed from generation to generation (heritability of fitness).[19] Thus, in successive generations members of a population are replaced by progeny of parents better adapted to survive and reproduce in the biophysical environment in which natural selection takes place. This teleonomy is the quality whereby the process of natural selection creates and preserves traits that are seemingly fitted for the functional roles they perform.[20] Natural selection is the only known cause of adaptation but not the only known cause of evolution. Other, nonadaptive causes of microevolution include mutation and genetic drift.

Whether prophecy, predictive programming or outright propaganda, cinema, television and literature both past and present are rife with visions of a future in which humanity is transformed, enslaved or even annihilated by technology run amok. What Are the JFK Assassination Conspiracy Theories? Historians on Popular Culture (2012)
The circumstances surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, spawned suspicions of a conspiracy. These suspicions were mitigated somewhat when an official investigation by the Warren Commission concluded the following year that there was no conspiracy. Since then, doubts have arisen regarding the Commission's controversial finding that only Lee Harvey Oswald was respons

Chapter 1 (00:15 - 20:30): Can TV be High Art?
Chapter 2 (20:30 - 36:30): The Invisible Hand in Popular Culture
Chapter 3 (36:30 - 45:47): Are Gangsters Tragic Heroes?
Chapter 4 (45:47 - 56:26): The Western
Chapter 5 (56:26 - 1:10:31): On the Simpsons and Seinfeld
Chapter 6 (1:10:31 - 1:27:51): Conservatives and Popular Culture
In his second conversation with Bill Kristol, University of Virginia literature professor Paul Cantor focuses on American popular culture and what we can learn about America and the world from our greatest television shows and movies. Cantor analyzes our best television series—including Deadwood, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, The Simpsons, and Seinfeld—and explains why we should take them seriously. Cantor and Kristol also discuss American cinema—including The Godfather, Scarface, and The Searchers—and consider the enduring appeal of gangster films and Westerns. Finally, Cantor argues that conservatives have been wrong to ignore popular culture and makes the case for why they should pay attention.

John Leo (born June 16, 1935) is a writer and a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. He edits Minding the Campus, the Institute's web site on America's universities, and is a contributing editor of City Journal. He is also a Visitor of Ralston College, a start-up liberal arts college in Savannah.
From 1988 to 2006 his weekly column for U.S. News & World Report[1] was syndicated to 140 newspapers by Universal Press Syndicate. The column focused mainly on social and cultural issues, most commonly political correctness, but also advertising, movies, language, the news media, education, pop psychology and the self-esteem movement. His 1995 column on Time-Warner, terming it America's "leading cultural polluter", sparked the campaign that led to Time-Warner's decision to sell off its 50 percent share in Interscope Records, a heavy producer of gangsta rap.
Leo is a graduate of Regis High School in New York City (1952) and the University of Toronto (1957). He covered the criminal courts for the Bergen Record of Hackensack, New Jersey, for three years before becoming editor in 1960 of the Catholic Messenger, the most liberal of the nation's Catholic newspapers, published by the diocese of Davenport, Iowa.
In 1963, he became an associate editor of Commonweal in New York, an independent liberal Catholic magazine. In his weekly column for the National Catholic Reporter (1964–1967) he pushed hard for free speech and greater openness in the church. In this campaign he attracted many critics and was disinvited as a speaker several times and banned in the diocese of Allentown. When the Reverend Daniel Berrigan, a flamboyant anti-Vietnam-war Jesuit, was exiled to Latin America and put under a vow of silence, Leo broke the story in his column and Berrigan was quickly brought back home.
The New York Times hired Leo in 1967 as its first reporter to cover the intellectual world. After leaving the Times, he was named an assistant administrator in New York City's Environmental Protection Administration. He returned to journalism and inaugurated the Press Clips column in The Village Voice and served as book editor of the sociological magazine, Society.
From 1974 to 1987 he worked at Time as writer of the behavior section, which covered psychology, psychiatry, feminism and intellectual trends. He also wrote essays and humor, including the Ralph-and-Wanda dialogues between a liberal feminist and her curmudgeonly husband.
Leo served on the board of advisers of the Columbia Journalism Review for ten years and on the church-state committee of the American Civil Liberties Union for two years. He has taught journalism at St. Ambrose University in Davenport and non-fiction writing at Southampton College on Long Island.
He thinks that researchers should not worry about the effects of their findings, saying, "You're just supposed to tell your peers what you found. I don't expect academics to fret about these matters", regarding a study showing that diversity decreases the social capital of a community.
His book of humor, How the Russians Invented Baseball and Other Essays of Enlightenment, appeared in 1989. His other books are Two Steps Ahead of the Thought Police (1994) and Incorrect Thoughts (2001).
He has three daughters and lives in Manhattan with his wife, Jacqueline Leo.

A History of Latinos in America: Their Impact on American Popular Culture (2000)

Hispanic Americans and Latino Americans (Spanish: hispanos, latinos) are an ethnolinguistic group of Americans with genealogical origins in the countries of Latin America and Spain. More generally it includes all persons in the United States who self-identify as Hispanic or Latino whether fully or partially. Hispanics form an ethnicity sharing a language (Spanish) and cultural heritage, rather than a race. American Hispanics are predominantly of Mexican, and to a lesser extent, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Salvadoran, Dominican, Guatemalan, and Colombian ancestry.
Hispanic Americans are the second fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States after Asian Americans. As of 2012, Hispanics constitute 17% of the United States population, or 53 million people. This figure includes 38 million Hispanophone Americans, making the US home to the largest community of Spanish speakers outside of Mexico, having surpassed Argentina, Colombia, and Spain within the last decade. Latinos overall are the second largest ethnic group in the United States, after non-Hispanic Whites (a group composed of dozens of sub-groups, like Hispanics and Latinos).
Hispanics have been in the territory of present-day United States continuously since the sixteenth century founding of Saint Augustine, Florida, by the Spanish. After Native Americans, Hispanics are the oldest ethnic group to inhabit what is today the United States. Spain colonized large areas of the Southwest and West Coast, including present-day California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas, all of which were also under the Republic of Mexico after its independence in the 19th century.
Hispanics and Latinos have also contributed some prominent actors and others in the film industry, a few of whom includes actors José Ferrer, the first Hispanic actor to win an Academy Award for his role in Cyrano de Bergerac, Anthony Quinn, Cameron Diaz, Martin Sheen, Rodrigo Santoro, Fernanda Montenegro, Daniel de Oliveira, Wagner Moura, Cheech Marín, Salma Hayek, Dolores del Río, Anita Page, Rita Hayworth, Antonio Banderas, Raquel Welch, Benicio del Toro, Eva Mendes, Zoe Saldana, Edward James Olmos, Maria Montez, Ramón Novarro, Ricardo Montalbán, Cesar Romero, Rosie Perez, Katy Jurado, Rita Moreno, Lupe Vélez, Esai Morales, Andy García, Rosario Dawson, John Leguizamo, and, behind the camera, directors Robert Rodriguez, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Brett Ratner (also producers and cinematographers) and Luis Valdez.
In standup comedy, Paul Rodríguez, Greg Giraldo, Cheech Marin, George Lopez, Freddie Prinze, Jade Esteban Estrada, Carlos Mencia, John Mendoza, and others are prominent.
Some of the Hispanic or Latino actors who achieved notable success in U.S. television include Desi Arnaz, Lynda Carter, Jimmy Smits, Selena Gomez, Carlos Pena, Jr., Eva Longoria, Sofía Vergara, Benjamin Bratt, Ricardo Montalbán, America Ferrera, Erik Estrada, Cote de Pablo, Freddie Prinze, Lauren Vélez, and Charlie Sheen. Kenny Ortega is an Emmy Award-winning producer, director, and choreographer who has choreographed many major television events such as Super Bowl XXX, the 72nd Academy Awards, and Michael Jacksons memorial service.
Hispanics and Latinos are underrepresented in U.S. television, radio, and film. This is combatted by organizations such as the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA), founded in 1975; and National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), founded in 1986.[75] Together with numerous Latino civil rights organizations, the NHMC led a "brownout" of the national television networks in 1999, after discovering that there were no Latinos in any of their new prime time shows that year.[76] This resulted in the signing of historic diversity agreements with ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC that have since increased the hiring of Hispanic and Latino talent and other staff in all of the networks.

wn.com/A History Of Latinos In America Their Impact On American Popular Culture (2000)

In a follow-up to our previous interview Transhumanism: Man’s Scientific Rise to Godhood, Aaron Franz returns to discuss transhumanism and popular culture. Whether prophecy, predictive programming or outright propaganda, cinema, television and literature both past and present are rife with visions of a future in which humanity is transformed, enslaved or even annihilated by technology run amok. Science fiction, fantasy and other speculative forms foresee a time when robots, cyborgs and genetically engineered supermen manipulate the masses, artificial intelligence arises to rival and even surpass human intelligence, and humanity finally merges with machines to achieve Godlike immortality. It’s a dream to some, a nightmare to others. From Brave New World to Blade Runner, from The Machine to Metropolis, and from Star Trek to The Six Million Dollar Man, we explore the hopes, fears, threats and promises of a future in which being human may no longer be enough.

The circumstances surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, spawned suspicions of a conspiracy. These suspicions were mitigated somewhat when an official investigation by the Warren Commission concluded the following year that there was no conspiracy. Since then, doubts have arisen regarding the Commission's controversial finding that only Lee Harvey Oswald was responsible for the assassination of Kennedy, and many Americans believe that others besides Oswald were also involved in the assassination.[1] Critics have argued that the Commission and the government have covered up crucial information pointing to a conspiracy.
Subsequent official investigations confirmed most of the conclusions of the Warren Commission. However, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) concluded in 1979 that Kennedy was probably assassinated as the result of a conspiracy, with: "...a high probability that two gunmen fired at [the] President". No person or organization was identified by the HSCA as having been a co-conspirator of Oswald.[2][3] The acoustical evidence that the HSCA partly based its conspiracy conclusion on has since been discredited.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
Most current theories put forth a criminal conspiracy involving parties as varied as the CIA, the Mafia, anti-Castro Cuban exile groups, the military industrial complex, the Israeli Mossad, sitting Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Cuban President Fidel Castro, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, the KGB, or some combination of those entities.[10] In an article published prior to the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's assassination, author Vincent Bugliosi estimates that a total of 42 groups, 82 assassins, and 214 people have been accused in conspiracy theories challenging the "lone gunman" theory.
JFK, a 1991 film that examines the events leading to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and alleged subsequent cover-up, through the eyes of former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison.
American Tabloid, a 1995 novel by James Ellroy, which portrays the five years leading up to the assassination from the point of view of a group of Mafia associates and CIA operatives, who become embroiled in the Bay of Pigs Invasion and eventually help plan the crime.
An American Affair, a 2009 film that portrays the assassination and the relation between Kennedy and Mary Pinchot Meyer.
The Cold Six Thousand, a 2001 novel by James Ellroy, the sequel to American Tabloid. The first third of the novel portrays a cover-up of the JFK assassination, while the remainder concerns the events leading up to the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy.
Executive Action, a 1973 film by David Miller that portrays the assassination from the point of view of the conspirators, who are right-wing tycoons and former covert ops specialists.
JFK: 3 Shots That Changed America, a 2009 documentary film compiled from archived news.
